I love Instagram. It’s my favorite social media, and with 800 Million active monthly users, I’m certainly not the only one! But one of the drawbacks to Instagram — at least for online business owners — is that for the longest time the only place you could have an active link was in your bio. Since then they’ve also added the ability to link to a website in stories, but only if you have over 10,000 followers. But the good news is, that’s not the case anymore! With product tagging, you can sell directly on Instagram!
This post contains affiliate links. If you are unsure what that means, please read this.
But let’s back up for a minute, because you might not have even seen any shoppable posts yet, so I just want to show you what they look like. I have the feature on my art account, and as you can see in this photo, there is a small white “bag” in the lower left-hand corner of this post:
If someone clicks on that bag, this will pop up:
And if they click on that, they will be taken to a product page:
And when they click on that blue “Shop Now” bar, they’re taken directly to my shop where they can choose a print size and check out:
Easy peasy, right? Plus, you can sell physical products, like prints, t-shirts, mugs, totes, etc., passively when you use fulfillment centers like Printful. But you can also sell digital products and/or original art, handmade products, etc. this way!
Here’s the deal: you have to have a Shopify store in order to do this. If you don’t already have a Shopify store, you can get a free 14 day trial right here and check it out. Once you have a Shopify store, there are a few more things you’ll need to do in order to get product tagging on Instagram:
You need to have your Instagram account set up as a business account. (Learn how to do that in this new tab.)
Link your Instagram account with your business’s Facebook Page.
Connect your Shopify store to your Facebook Page Catalog. The products linked will actually come from your Facebook catalog, so you cannot skip this step.
Finally… you wait.
I know that waiting isn’t fun, but it only took a few weeks for mine to be accepted, so the sooner you do all of this, the better. 😉 Oh, and while I was waiting, I also made sure I had the latest version of Instagram.
And then, one day, like MAGIC! ✨ I could Sell Directly on Instagram!
One day I logged into post something, and all of a sudden I had the option to tag my products, which looked like this:
Then I just tap the product or products (yes! you can tag more than one product in a photo, too! Woo!) like this:
I just tapped on the part of the image where my print was, and then this list of my products pops up, and I choose which one this is:
And then I just share the post as I normally do! It’s so easy and, quite frankly, exciting!
Unfortunately, at this point only those who signed up for Instagram with an IP address (and/or was downloaded) in the U.S. But hopefully they will make it available to more countries, soon!
So what do you think? Will you set up a Shopify store to sell your products and then apply to sell directly on Instagram? I’d love to hear all about your experience!
